Clairin Vaval

Clairin · Distillerie Arawaks (Chelo)

97 proofNASCavaillon, Haiti
Clairin Vaval is rum stripped to its most elemental — no aging, no blending, no polish. What remains is terroir in a glass: the wild, indigenous sugarcane of southern Haiti, fermented with native yeasts and distilled once. It's a spirit that demands curiosity and rewards it with a flavor profile unlike anything else in the rum world.

Tasting Notes

Nose

Intensely aromatic — overripe tropical fruits and banana are immediate, with a grassy agricole quality underneath. There's a funky, almost yeasty fermentation character, and hints of citrus peel and raw sugarcane round out a wild, vivid nose.

Palate

Full and surprisingly textured for an unaged spirit. Tropical fruit and sugarcane juice flavors dominate, but there's an earthy minerality and a peppery spice that gives the palate shape. The agricole grassiness carries through, and a faint coconut sweetness appears mid-palate.

Finish

Long and persistent, with lingering tropical fruit, a touch of banana, and a clean herbal fade.

The Story

Produced by Michel Sajous's neighbor Chelo at the small Distillerie Arawaks near Cavaillon, Haiti, Clairin Vaval is made from indigenous sugarcane varieties, fermented with ambient yeasts, and distilled in a rudimentary copper still — a practice essentially unchanged for generations.

Hampden Estate Pure Single Jamaican Rum Aged 8 Years Cask Strength

Hampden Estate

Hampden at cask strength is rum without compromise — the charcoal line drawn thick and unblended. The Trelawny pot still character delivers esters in abundance, but eight years in oak channels that wildness into something structured and deeply rewarding. Add water slowly and watch it unfold.

Appleton Estate 21 Year Old Nassau Valley Casks

Appleton Estate

Twenty-one Jamaican years — where heat and humidity accelerate the angel's share dramatically — means this rum has sacrificed more to the tropics than most spirits twice its stated age in cooler climates. Master Blender Joy Spence's hand is evident in the seamless integration of pot and column still distillates. This is rum as serious contemplation spirit, demanding nothing but a glass and time.

Rhum J.M XO Martinique Rhum Agricole

Rhum J.M

Rhum J.M's XO showcases what happens when terroir-driven cane juice meets serious wood management. The volcanic slopes of Mount Pelée provide mineral-rich water and altitude-grown cane that translate into a rum of uncommon depth. This is a sipping rum that belongs in a conversation with fine cognac.

Hampden Estate Great House Distillery Edition

Hampden Estate

Great House is Hampden turned up to maximum volume. It sits at the high end of the ester spectrum, and that means it's not for the timid — but for rum enthusiasts who want to taste the full expression of Jamaican pot still tradition, it's essential. A few drops of water open it beautifully. The distillery's spring-fed limestone water, drawn from the Martha Brae River basin, creates the mineral-rich environment that makes Hampden's legendary fermentation possible.
