Clairin Communal Sajous Ansyen 36 Mois

Clairin · Michel Sajous Distillery

101.4 proof3 YearSaint-Michel-de-l'Attalaye, Haiti
Clairin represents rum at its most elemental — sugarcane grown on the distiller's own land, wild-fermented, pot-distilled, and unmanipulated. The 36-month aging on this expression adds just enough structure to organize the wildness without domesticating it. It's terroir-driven rum in the truest sense.

Tasting Notes

Nose

Wild and aromatic, with ripe banana and tropical fruit leading into grassy sugarcane funk. A distinctive agricole grassiness mingles with hints of citrus peel and toasted coconut from the cask. Underneath, a faint leather note and earthy minerality emerge.

Palate

Medium-bodied with an unexpected combination of tropical fruit sweetness and dry, herbaceous character. The oak aging adds toffee and vanilla without taming the spirit's feral energy. Spice and dried fruit develop through the mid-palate, giving way to a muscovado sugar warmth.

Finish

Medium-long with lingering banana, agricole grassiness, and a clean, spicy close.

The Story

Michel Sajous cultivates native sugarcane on the dry plateau of Saint-Michel-de-l'Attalaye in northern Haiti, where he distills clairin using open-air wild fermentation and a small copper pot still, preserving a centuries-old Haitian tradition.
